Best Buy offers up free electronics recycling in 117 stores

Best Buy already gladly accepts cellphones, batteries, ink cartridges and other items for recycling, but it looks like you can now offload some of your larger, unwanted electronics gear free of charge as well — if you near one of the 117 stores in the Baltimore, San Francisco, and Minnesota areas that are participating in the company’s new test program, that is. According to the company, those stores will now accepting up to two items per day, per household, including televisions and monitors up to 32-inches, computers, cameras and other devices not including microwaves, air conditioners. or appliances. There’s no word on any future plans for expansion of the program just yet, with Best Buy only going so far as to say that it’ll “evaluate the success of the test and determine options for scaling it across the U.S.” Of course, there’s also plenty of other recycling options available if you don’t want to wait for Best Buy to make up its mind.

Creative’s Vado Pocket Video Cam gets reviewed

With the just hitting the scenes (and skyrocketing up Amazon’s sales charts), there’s no doubt that Creative’s fighting an uphill battle with the Vado Pocket Video Cam. Designed to compete in the YouTube-friendly pocket camcorder sector, this critter was actually said to be built a bit studier than the Flip and pack a more luscious display to boot. Reviewers also found the audio quality to be (expectedly) subpar, and while video quality was decent for a sub-$100 device, the compression monster managed to make ho hum results downright ugly when clips were uploaded to the ‘Tube. Still, for the market this one’s aimed at (read: a market without videophiles), it’s not a half bad addition to the cargo pocket arsenal — just don’t go expecting the world and you’ll be fine.

Mio’s navigator concept looks like a camera + GPS Po’ Boy

This isn’t the first odd-ball GPS concept we’ve seen from Mio. This time, we’ve got a personal navigation device (PND) teamed with a digital camera. The device features a 3.5-inch touchscreen, 8 megapixel CCD, and presumably some kind of integrated geo-tagging ability. On display now at Computex where Engadget Chinese has all the pics.

Sony announces own backside illuminated CMOS — take that OmniVision

Well, there you have it: the BSI gauntlet has been officially thrown. Sony just announced its own backside-illuminated CMOS sensor meant to rival OmniVision’s achievement. Sony’s sensor features 1.75 micron pixels totalling 5 effective megapixels capable of 60fps and offers low noise at twice the sensitivity of traditional sensors at the same pixel size. That’s a signal to noise ratio of +8dB (+6dB sensitivity, -2dB noise), nerds. Nice Sony, but OmniVision’s 8 megapixel sensor targeting cameraphones (Sony’s is apparently targeting digital cameras and camcorders) brings the pixels down to 1.4 microns (with 0.9 micron pixels on the roadmap) albeit with an undisclosed SNR. Regardless, we look forward to seeing our friends’ chemically-spiked club shots in excruciatingly slovenly detail later this year.

BSI, learn it — it’s shaping up to do for imaging what perpendicular did for magnetic storage.

Pure Digital Flip Mino review round-up

While it certainly didn’t appeal to everybody, Pure Digital’s cheapcorder nonetheless found quite the audience, which has not surprisingly led to some raised expectations for the company’s just-released follow-up, the . Judging from the first batch of reviews, however, it looks like Pure Digital has mostly managed to hit the mark ($30 premium notwithstanding), even if it still likely won’t be getting folks to ditch their more full-featured cameras. Among the first out of the gate with a review was Laptop Magazine, which put the Ultra and Mino head-to-head and found that Mino won out in terms of design, specs, and power options, although the Ultra hung on to an edge in video quality, which it says remained “consistently brighter,” particularly in low-light conditions. The Wall Street Journal’s Mossberg Solution (not Moss himself) didn’t have as much of a problem with the video quality (given the expectations), but it did find that while the Mino’s touch-sensitive buttons look great, “they aren’t as functional as they needed to be.” Wired’s Gadget Lab also had some quibbles about the hard to press buttons, but that wasn’t enough to stop it from handing out an initial rating of 8 out of 10 (a more in-depth review is promised for later), with the cam’s slimmer design and ability to get video up onto the web quickly winning it high marks. ASUS’ UFOTO UF735 digiframe doubles as secondary PC display

Finally, a little innovation in the midst of watered-down, me-too digital photo frames. Here we have the UFOTO UF735, which exhibits a 7-inch 800 x 480 resolution display, USB 2.0 connectivity, headphone jack, 128MB of built-in memory, integrated speakers, a multicard reader for handling JPEG / BMP / GIF / MP3 files and your choice of silver, pink or blue frame colors. Beyond those yawn-inducing stats, you’ll find a swank sub-display function, which enables owners to use it as a secondary display (SideShow, anyone?) on their PC. As is customary for ASUS, it’s not doling out pricing / release information just yet, but this one may actually be worth paying attention to when it finally lands.
